FOUNDER / DESIGNER
John Hildebrand first began to explore the world through the lens of a camera. The camera became more than a window to the world but a vehicle to identify his artistic point of view and establish a creative vision. When it came time to purchase eyewear, John felt disconnected from the brands on the shelves as they were not as inspiring as the lens that shaped his world. With the same fearless spirit that he approached his art, John set to work in his Malibu garage to create an eyewear brand that he could identify with. Using his nickname “SICKY,” John created prototypes that were bold, distinctive and captured the attention of everyone he met. After attending a party in Malibu, the frames quickly became the center of attention. Everyone wanted to get their own pair of SICKY’s, a brand that was only in its infancy.
What does he do? John is the creator, founder, and owner of SICKY™
What’s his deal? In a nutshell, the SICKY™ brand evolved out of John’s passion to create and learn, his experiences, and his day-to-day life. We’ll go on the record here, and chock it up to the fact that if it weren’t for John, SICKY™ wouldn’t exist.
John learned to be outgoing and leave it all out on the table at a young age. Subcultural and Art were guiding forces that shaped his outlook on life, and would come in handy as his careers in photography and production evolved. Well-rounded in terms of travel and artistic expression, with a animated punk-rock attitude, John is the linchpin when it comes to bringing groups of talented people together and executing projects that would give a normal person a stroke. Funny too, when we asked him to describe a “normal” day in his life, John laughed. He paused for a moment. And then he smiled with a hint of bewilderment, and responded, “A normal day? Um. There is no normal day. I don’t even know what that word means. Every single day is a different adventure.”
John attended the Brooks Institute for photography, and ran a successful photography studio for over 10 years. He also co-owned and operated an event production company based in Malibu for 13 years, working hand-in-hand with several venues in LA and celebrity clients.
What is SICKY? “To me, “SICKY” means freedom of expression. No barriers. No worries. SICKY, to me means, uh, oh my gosh… it means aggression. It means passion. It means hard work. It means full-of-life. SICKY consumes me to no end. I live and breathe it. SICKY means being proud of who you are – owning it. SICKY is being proud of your individuality and who you are as a person. You stand strong to what you believe in. You back what you say.”
